SASA Postgraduate Paper Competition
We at the South African Statistical Association (SASA) Education Committee invite all students enrolled for Masters or PhDs in Statistics at South African tertiary institutions in 2024 to participate in the 2025 Postgraduate Paper Competition. This year, there is a prize for the best published paper from a Masters or PhD, as well as a prize for the best unreviewed paper.
The student submitting the paper should be the main contributor/author of the work. This will be confirmed with the degree supervisor (or institution contact person). A published paper is one that was published in 2024/2025 from (or for) the student's Masters/PhD, while an unpublished paper is one that has not yet received any reviewer feedback from any peer-reviewed publication. Papers for either option may not have been submitted to the SASA Postgraduate Paper Competition before.
An unpublished paper, with appendices, should be no more than 15 pages in length. Data sets, coding, and supplementary materials can be uploaded to a free data repository such as figshare , Mendeley Data, Open Science Framework, or similar, and can be referenced in the paper.
Closing date for entries is 31 August 2025. Abstracts should be submitted by 31 July 2025.
Important note:
For the paper submissions to be considered, the student author(s) must be a registered SASA member in 2025. SASA membership is free to all full-time students and registration can be done via https://www.sastat.org/apply-for-sasa-membership
If you would like to enter a paper, please proceed as follows:
Complete the competition form and upload the required abstract by 31 July 2025. You will be given the choice on this form to upload an abstract OR the full paper.
Remove any reference to the student/author(s), the supervisor or the University from each paper and upload the electronic version of each paper by 31 August 2025.
Upload proof of SASA membership for each entrant.
A number of judges will be selected to rank the projects. The ranked results will be analysed and the winners announced before the next annual SASA conference. Winners will be asked to be photographed.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Michael von Maltitz (vmaltitzmj@ufs.ac.za).
We are looking forward to receiving your papers!
